What Happens in a Family Constellations Workshop?

Many people feel curious about Family Constellations but are unsure what actually happens during a workshop.

Because the process is experiential, it can be difficult to imagine it simply from reading about it. In this article I’ll describe what a typical Family Constellations workshop looks like and how the process unfolds.

Arriving and Creating Circle

We begin by gathering in a circle, creating a welcoming and safe space for the group. The day starts with introductions and time to arrive and settle together.

This moment allows everyone to become present and to feel the atmosphere of the group.
Bringing a Question

When someone feels ready to explore an issue, they share their question with the facilitator.
The question may relate to family relationships, health, life direction, or patterns that feel difficult to understand.
Representatives in the Constellation

With consent, members of the group may stand as representatives for people or elements connected to the person’s family system.
Participation is always voluntary.
The person whose constellation it is places the representatives in the space, and we observe what unfolds.

Representatives Experience

Representatives often notice bodily sensations — warmth, heaviness, emotion, tension, or shifts in temperature.
As these experiences are shared, underlying relational dynamics can begin to emerge.
This is one of the aspects that makes Family Constellations so unique: insights arise not only through thinking, but through embodied perception.

The Role of the Facilitator

The facilitator asks questions and may suggest movements or simple sentences that support clarity and resolution within the system.
These small shifts can sometimes allow the constellation to move toward a new balance.

Participating in Different Ways

In a Family Constellations workshop you may choose to:

• bring your own issue
• represent for others
• simply observe the process

People are often surprised by the sense of connection that arises in the group and how one person’s story can resonate with others.

A Space of Care and Respect

The work unfolds slowly, with clear boundaries and confidentiality.
Each constellation is approached with respect for the individuals and families involved.
